Is Jayson Blair the nail in the coffin for New York City? Kaus suggests that WaPo go national to replace the discredited Times, citing Stanley Kurtz. It's really not hard to see this happening. Irrespective, there is going to be an exeunt of talent from the NYT unless lots of heads roll. Where will they go? Some already left in the past 18 months, to the LAT and elsewhere.
New York City is already showing major signs of stress at its infrastructure: one major sign was a recent study that showed NYC added 100,000 public-sector jobs and not a single private-sector job in the past decade. The financial industry is diversifying into Jersey, Philly and elsewhere. The real estate bubble is ready to pop, and the City is balancing a terrorism-wracked budget on its citizens' backs. The exit of the NYT from its place in prominence and the abandonment of the City by the paper's braintrust might just be the first major indicator of the tipping point. After all, the people in NYC aren't half as important if the people covering them don't get the national play they're used to.
