The Village Voice is working on a story on unauthorized police surveillance, as the following e-mail indicates:
>For the Village Voice, I need your help, and that of
>any witnesses or victims of police surveillance or
>illegal undercover work you may have been
>aware of that has been directed towards yours or other
>activist groups...including footage of brutality
>and preemptive detective work, that has occurred in
>the post-9/11 atmosphere, geared at those expressing
>dissent.
>I know it was prevalent at February anti-WEF protests,
>and I only assume it has continued. THIS IS SPECIFIC
>TO NYPD.
>
>Recently I was asked by staff writer Chisun Lee to
>help out on a piece she's doing- we need people who
>have specific testimony of cops way-overstepping legal
>bounds of videotaping, photographing, doing
>surveillance on, and tapping the organizing work of
>protest groups in and around the NYC area. It is
>a story that hearkens back to the Abbie Hoffman/Black
>Panther trials for civil liberties in organizing.
>
>Anyone who will talk to us about recent events
>(specifically post-9-11) of cop surveillance in
>activist groups would be greatly appreciated. I know
>you guys would be especially attuned to these things,
>and thank you in advance for your assistance. This
>piece will be witness-driven, and accurate testimonies
>of activists will propell the feature.
>
>PLEASE FORWARD THIS INFORMATION ON TO YOUR FRIENDS and
>AFFECTED COLLEAGUES!!!
>
>Have people call Chisun Lee at the Village Voice if
>they are willing to talk about particuar cases they
>have been privy to (please be willing to use your real
>names, unless you are in a particularly bad
>situation), her number is 212-475-3333 x. 2028.
>or Clee@villagevoice.com
>Or call me, Jess at x.2025, or email
>jesswis@earthlink.net
>I can answer your questions and stuff, or email me
>here.
>I'm there 2-5pm M-W this week.
>Deadline, think urgency. As in ASAP.
>Thanks a ton. -Jess
