"By our rules now, John F. Kennedy almost certainly could never have become president." That's the teaser and conclusion for
yesterday's op-ed about Kennedy. What the Op-Ed is actually about is what facts were known previously and when. The teaser/conclusion doesn't fit the essay and isn't justified in the article, especially based on the examples he gives:Witness the skeptical surveillance of the medical charts of Bill Bradley in 2000 or Vice President Dick Cheney today. Obviously, Safire would disagree with that assessment about Cheney, and Bill Bradley seems to be coming out of left field. But a part of what's interesting is that none of these columnists are discussing Reagan, who actually was president and actually likely had Alzheimer's in office.
